Signed Japanese Wakizashi "Short Sword"
KANENUSHI /KANEKIMI
The wakizashi, a type of Japanese short sword, first appeared in Japan in the 15th or 16th century:
The wakizashi originated during Japan's feudal period.
The wakizashi was used as a backup or auxiliary sword, for close quarters fighting, to behead a defeated opponent, and sometimes to commit seppuku.
Since this blade is signed (KaneNushi) which can also be read as KANEKIMI (kan 1182) we can say it was made as a wakizashi rather than being originally a katana and shortened over the centuries thus losing any signature which might have been there.
There are 2 Smiths using this name going back to 1449 from Mino school however going of the signature, the work and the 2 Kanji mei used it seems to fit more with the 1st generation Kanenushi from Hotoku period (1449-1452)
A swordsmiths from the Mino School.
Mino is one of the main schools of sword smithing production with many many masters through all periods of Japanese sword production going back to 1156 .
A nice piece of history on this one ,
with some age to it with a nice suguha hamon and strong appearance with many battles in its long life. mounted in shirasaya (resting scabbard)
Obviously owned by a proud samurai and used many times for what it was made for
