He was honoured for the saving of the women & children from the ill-fated HMS Birkenhead off the coast of South Africa in 1852, while on the military transport. Capt Bond was one of the very few survivors from the wreck.

The family owned an estate in County Armagh, as well as in England.

The chains may not be a matching pair as they have slightly different engraving to the ID panels "Capt Bond 12th lancers" Manufactured in iron chain link they have suffered some rust/pitting over the years, which would be expected.
