Japanese Mid to late 19th Century Tsurugi or Ken
The term Tsurugi designates a straight, double-edged, bladed weapon from Japan. It is a sword, which means that this weapon has two edges, one on each side of its blade, unlike the tachi, katana, wakizashi or odachi which have only one cutting edge, on one of the two sides of the blade. The piece measures 52cms incorporating handle and scabbard. The outer brass skin is heavily embellished with Japanese related symbols and the casing has remnants of a silver wash, which sadly has gone. The internal lining is hardwood, which is partly missing in the scabbard. This causes the blade to be slightly loose when driven home into the sheath. Overall an exceptionally fine Japanese edge weapon from the period.
